Love him or hate him, but none can deny that economist and former finance minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, is perhaps the most distinguished prime minister India has ever had. Soft-spoken and with a cool head on his sturdy shoulders, Singh has, in his five years as PM, faced both applause and brickbats for some of the decisions he’s made.

A surprise pick for the PM’s post by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in 2004, this humble academician was thrust into political limelight and immediately hailed as the best man for the job. Congress’ opponents, however, have always derided him as a mere puppet in the hands of ‘Madam’. But, Singh has been instrumental in inking the crucial nuclear deal with the US, besides gaining the popular vote of the most ideal PM.

However, a lot has changed in the last four years, both political alliances as well as India’s stand on terrorism, especially after the heinous attack on Mumbai in November last, which caught the UPA government snoozing.

With the 2009 Lok Sabha elections having already commenced, Ganesha predicts whether India will again vote Singh back in office or opt for a new government that can bring lasting solutions to the country’s pressing problems.
