Moon Void of Course (Originally published on 4th December 2005)

Moon Void of Course

The term Void of Course Moon (V/C) is used in Western Astrology since decades. This is an important position of Moon. Technically, it depends on it’s degree (longitude) in the orbit.

There are two definitions of Moon V/C.

  1. Traditional

As per it’s degrees, when Moon is ahead of all the seven classical planets except Rahu, Ketu, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto – Moon is considered void of course. This means that after Moon has made any major aspect with either of the other classical planets and till the time it doesn’t cross the sign it is in and has made the aspect, for that period Moon will be Void of Course. Orbs should not be considered here, hence all aspects should be exact.

Example – 1 (Void of Course Moon)

If Moon is in Aries at 18 degrees and no other planet is at 18 degree or above, not making any major aspect (Conjunction – 0 degrees, Sextile – 60 degrees, Square – 90 degrees, Trine – 120 degrees and Opposition – 180 degrees)

Rashi/Sign House Planet Degree
Capricorn 1st house Sun 05
Aquarius 2nd house Mercury 06
Pisces 3rd house Venus 10
Aries 4th house Moon 18
Taurus 5th house Rahu 10
Gemini 6th house Jupiter 13
Cancer 7th house Saturn 02
Leo 8th house
Virgo 9th house Mars 12
Libra 10th house
Scorpio 11th house Ketu 10
Sagittarius 12th house

Example 2 (Moon – not in Void of Course Position)

If Jupiter is in Gemini at 28 degrees and there is no major aspect between Moon and Jupiter, but as Moon is not at the highest degree at that particular moment, it is NOT void of course. Thus, if any classical planet would be at degrees higher than Moon, not making any major aspect with Moon – it would not be void of course.

Rashi/Sign House Planet Degree
Capricorn 1st house Sun 05
Aquarius 2nd house Mercury 06
Pisces 3rd house Venus 10
Aries 4th house Moon 18
Taurus 5th house Rahu 10
Gemini 6th house Jupiter 28
Cancer 7th house Saturn 02
Leo 8th house
Virgo 9th house Mars 12
Libra 10th house
Scorpio 11th house Ketu 10
Sagittarius 12th house

Example 3 (Moon – not in Void of Course Position)

Here, in third example, there is a Square aspect between Moon and Saturn. Thus, Moon is not void of course.

Rashi/Sign House Planet Degree
Capricorn 1st house Sun 05
Aquarius 2nd house Mercury 06
Pisces 3rd house Venus 10
Aries 4th house Moon 18
Taurus 5th house Rahu 10
Gemini 6th house Jupiter 13
Cancer 7th house Saturn 18
Leo 8th house
Virgo 9th house Mars 12
Libra 10th house
Scorpio 11th house Ketu 10
Sagittarius 12th house

Till now, what we have understood is, Moon Void of course is Moon’s specific position with regards to degrees and aspects.

  1. Modern Approach

After Moon makes a major aspect with any planet in or from the sign it is posited in and till it does not make any other aspect with any other planet in or from the sign it is posited in – that period is called ‘Moon Void of Course’.

Example 4 (Moon Void of Course)

In the following example, what we notice is, Moon is at 18 degree in Aries and Saturn is at 28 degrees in Cancer. There is no other planet between 18 degree and 28 degree in any sign – making any major aspect with Moon.

This indicates that Moon will be ‘Void of Course’ between 18 degrees and 28 degrees.

Rashi/Sign House Planet Degree
Capricorn 1st house Sun 05
Aquarius 2nd house Mercury 06
Pisces 3rd house Venus 10
Aries 4th house Moon 18
Taurus 5th house Rahu 10
Gemini 6th house Jupiter 12
Cancer 7th house Saturn 28
Leo 8th house
Virgo 9th house Mars 12
Libra 10th house
Scorpio 11th house Ketu 10
Sagittarius 12th house

Note:-

Thus, we conclude that, as per Modern Approach, Moon will be void of course almost daily, more than once or twice.

Now, matter which catches attention is, why Moon Void of Course is given so much importance. What is very significant and important about it?

Like in Vedic Astrology, we consider Rahu Kaalam to be inauspicious for doing any new task, Moon Void of Course also plays important role. This is though sidelined or say unknown to many astrologers is very important aspect to consider.

Main reason behind this is, any task started in Moon V/C position is not completed in due course of time or meets failure. This is based on an old saying ‘NO ASPECT – NO EVENT’. This means that when Moon doesn’t receive any auspicious or inauspicious aspect – the work done, decisions taken may not bring success easily.

Like we know ‘Chandrama Manso Jaatah’ meaning ‘Moon reflects/signifies mind’.

In the period of V/C, generally a person is not much focussed. Our judgmental ability is not at it’s best and as a result decision-making suffers.

What should be avoided when Moon is V/C

General life events

Weddings, engagement ceremony, Appearing for job interviews, any new first time meeting, entering new house, starting any legal activities, buying a new car or vehicle, buying any new important household article, buying of property, new investments – in short beginning of any new tasks.

Political events

Do not accept or apply for election tickets, do not pass new resolutions or laws, do not take any oath etc.

Medical events

Do not operate your patient, do not even get operated, do not start new medication for any new diseases, do not go to a doctor for diagnosis etc.

Business

Do not launch new products, important business deals should be avoided, do not start production of a new product, do not start a new company, do not start a new partnership or sign any new documents etc.

Which activity is preferable during V/C

If Moon Void of Course is so difficult time to deal with activities, what should we do in that period that is the question. Because this phase relates to ‘freedom of mind’ as Moon is free from aspects, one can indulge into spiritual activities like doing medication, Pooja, recitation of mantra, relaxing, picnicking, going out for movies or any other entertainment activity.

Those who are spiritually advanced can do dowsing, read books on religion, philosophy, metaphysics or any allied activities.

Your daily routines like exercise, going for a stroll, friendly gossiping, housekeeping, arranging your office files and documentation, why not clean your computer of extra and unwanted files?, home and office purchase, personal shopping, clearing out your bills and dues, accounting of your expenses – it will help you identify unnecessary expense areas, play with your kids and give them quality time, play any indoor games (if playing for the first time – you might loose it!!).

It has been noted that activities done during V/C as per traditional definition have mostly met failures. Activities done during modern definition of V/C – people have met with lot of difficulties, delays and problems and still, the success has been low.

We believe that proper usage of V/C can be guiding star for important events and decisions in your life.
